GianJyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJIMT) in Mohali hosted the Red Run Marathon on August 13, 2024, an event organised with Punjab State AIDS Control Society (PSACS) to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention. The marathon, which saw enthusiastic participation from over 200 students, was part of a broader campaign to educate the public on HIV/AIDS and the resources available for prevention and care.
The event began with a welcome note by Dr. Bobby Gulati, Additional Project Director of PSACS, followed by an address from Shri Varinder Kumar Sharma, IAS, Special Secretary of Health and Family Welfare.
Dr. Balbir Singh, Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, in his keynote address, emphasized the critical importance of continuous education and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He spoke passionately about the necessity of breaking down the stigma associated with the disease and the importance of widespread testing and prevention efforts. Dr. Singh also highlighted the launch of the Mobile ICTC Van during the event, a significant initiative that will allow HIV testing and counselling services to reach far-flung and underserved areas of Punjab. This van represents a major step forward in ensuring that all residents of Punjab have access to vital health services, regardless of their location.
The marathon was flagged off by Dr. Balbir Singh, Hon’ble minister, to the beats of Dhol. The marathon covered a distance of 5 kilometres and saw enthusiastic participation from the runners, who ran with great energy and spirit, reflecting their commitment to the cause. The top performers in the marathon were awarded cash prizes, further encouraging participation in such important health initiatives.
Other dignitaries present during the event were Shri Kumar Rahul, IAS, Administrative Secretary, Health and Family Welfare; MrDipankar Garg, SDM Mohali;Dr. Malkiat Singh Mann, Assistant Director, Youth Services, Punjab; Officiating Civil Surgeon Dr Girish Dogra.
Dr. AneetBedi, Director of GJIMT, congratulated all participants and emphasized the role of the institute in supporting public health campaigns. She noted the importance of awareness events like the Red Run Marathon in reducing the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and promoting a healthier society.
Shri J.S. Bedi, Chairman of the GianJyoti Group, expressed his gratitude to all the participants, dignitaries, and organizers, praising the collaborative efforts that contributed to the success of the event. He underscored the vital role of community engagement in addressing public health challenges.
The event concluded with a strong message: through awareness, education, and access to health services, Punjab can make significant strides in the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS.
